How to block ads and trackers in your browser
You do not need a home lab to cut tracking. A browser extension plus privacy DNS on your phone covers most daily browsing.
Desktop: install a privacy extension
Add a blocker that maintains ads, tracker, and malware lists — then keep it enabled on the browsers you actually use (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Firefox). Connect it to your account so rules and stats stay in sync.
If a site breaks, pause blocking for that site only instead of turning protection off globally. Most breakage comes from a single aggressive filter, not from blocking trackers in general.
Phone: privacy DNS in minutes
Phones do much of your browsing, but extensions are limited there. Encrypted DNS (DoH/DoT) with a privacy-focused resolver filters many ad and tracker domains at the network level.
Follow a guided profile or OS setting rather than hand-editing obscure menus. One-tap iOS profiles and Android Private DNS make this realistic for non-experts.
Keep lists updated and measure progress
Threat and tracker lists change weekly. Leave automatic updates on, and glance at blocked counts or your privacy score so you know protection is still running after OS updates.
Optional whole-home filtering (a network hub) helps guest Wi‑Fi and smart TVs, but it is not required to get most of the benefit on your own devices.
